Mayor of London Greener Schools programme

Author: Oliver Wakefield-Smith, Founder Digital Signet. Reviewed against DfE Sustainability Strategy (Mar 2025) and Education Estates Strategy (Feb 2026). Verified 22 June 2026.

The Mayor of London's Greener Schools programme, launched as a pilot in December 2024, supports London state schools with capital grants for decarbonisation measures such as solar panels, heat pumps and retrofit, alongside green-skills and climate-education activity. The 2025-26 pilot made £2.984m of grant funding available.

Scope

The Greener Schools pilot funds capital net zero interventions in London state schools, including rooftop solar PV, heat pumps and building retrofit, plus pupil-facing climate education delivered with partners such as RAFT and Students Organising for Sustainability UK. A separate Mayoral renewables allocation supports larger renewable-energy generation at schools.

Boroughs and schools awarded

In April 2025 the pilot awarded 38 schools across 16 London boroughs, including special schools, nurseries, primaries and secondaries. Eligibility runs through the London boroughs; refer to the current Greener Schools programme guidance for the live application route and future cycles.

Award sizes

Across the 38 pilot schools the award averaged over £77,000 per school, with capital grants of up to £500,000 per project. The Mayor's office estimates participating schools could save up to around £15,000 a year on energy bills.

Stacking with PSDS

Greener Schools grant can pair with PSDS and Salix funding on a bundled scope, for example covering the solar PV element while PSDS covers heat decarbonisation. Match-funding and eligibility rules differ between the two; confirm against the most recent Mayor's office and Salix guidance before assuming a stack.
